Replacing halogen downlights with LED
Swapping halogen for LED saves energy and heat, but the old transformers and dimmers often decide whether the new lights behave.
Many older villas and apartments have low-voltage halogen downlights, each with a transformer above the ceiling. Fitting LED lamps into those transformers can cause flicker or early failure, because the transformers were designed for higher loads. Often the better route is replacing the fitting with an integrated LED downlight or a fitting with a suitable driver.
Installation guides cover what a fitting or appliance needs from the electrics before it goes on the wall or ceiling.
Cut-out sizes vary, so new fittings must match existing holes or the ceiling needs repair. Dimmers designed for halogen may not suit LED. Colour temperature and beam angle affect how rooms feel and should be chosen deliberately.
01In short
The points that matter most
Transformers matter
Old transformers may not suit LED loads.
Match cut-outs
Avoid ceiling repairs by matching sizes.
Check dimmers
Halogen dimmers may cause flicker.
02Detail
Upgrade options
Lamp swap
LED lamps in existing fittings, if compatible.
Fitting replacement
Integrated LED downlights with drivers.
Control upgrade
LED-compatible dimmers or switches.
Heat and fire hoods
Where fittings sit under insulation or in fire-rated ceilings, the replacement must suit those conditions.
03Checklist
Before upgrading
Count fittings
And note dimmers.
Measure cut-outs
Diameter of existing holes.
Decide colour
Warm or cool white.
04Questions
Questions people ask
- Can I just change the bulbs?
- Sometimes, if transformers and dimmers are compatible.
- Will LED reduce heat in the ceiling?
- Yes, LEDs produce much less heat than halogen.
- Why do my LED replacements flicker?
- Often transformer or dimmer incompatibility.
- Do LED downlights need drivers?
- Integrated LED downlights include or come with a driver suited to them; mains LED lamps contain their own electronics.
- Is it worth doing all rooms at once?
- Doing a room or a circuit at a time keeps colour and dimming consistent within each space.
