Choosing dimmers for LED lighting
A dimmer that worked with halogen may not work with LED. Choosing the right one avoids flicker, buzzing and short lamp life.
Dimmers control light by chopping the electrical waveform. Older leading-edge dimmers were designed for incandescent and halogen lamps. Many LED lamps work better with trailing-edge dimmers designed for electronic loads. Manufacturers publish compatibility lists showing which lamps work with which dimmers.
Installation guides cover what a fitting or appliance needs from the electrics before it goes on the wall or ceiling.
Dimmers also have minimum and maximum loads. A few LED lamps may fall below the minimum, causing flicker; too many may exceed ratings. Smart dimmers add app control and scenes but still need compatible lamps.
