Installing outdoor sockets

Outdoor sockets make gardens and terraces usable. They need enclosures, protection and positions designed for the outdoors.

Garden tools, pool equipment, outdoor kitchens, festive lighting and pressure washers all need power outside. Running extension leads through doors and windows is unsafe and inconvenient. Outdoor sockets with weatherproof enclosures solve that, provided they are protected by an RCD and placed sensibly.

Installation guides cover what a fitting or appliance needs from the electrics before it goes on the wall or ceiling.

Positions should avoid direct irrigation spray and pooling water, and be high enough off the ground to stay clear of splashes and sand. The cable route from the house needs protection, whether surface-run in suitable conduit or buried in ducts.
