Installing LED strip lighting
LED strips are cheap to buy and easy to stick up. Making them last, and reaching the driver later, is the part that needs planning.
LED strip lighting is used in ceiling coves, under kitchen cabinets, inside wardrobes, behind headboards and along stairs. Most strips run at low voltage and need a driver — a power supply that converts mains voltage. The driver gets warm, eventually fails, and must be reachable for replacement. Hiding it permanently behind plaster or fixed joinery is a common mistake.
Installation guides cover what a fitting or appliance needs from the electrics before it goes on the wall or ceiling.
Long runs can lose voltage along their length, showing as dimmer or colour-shifted light at the far end; feeding the strip from both ends or in sections solves it. Strips also produce heat, so mounting them in aluminium profiles helps them last and gives a cleaner line of light.
01In short
The points that matter most
Keep the driver reachable
Drivers fail eventually and must be replaceable.
Watch long runs
Voltage drop makes far ends dimmer.
Use profiles
Aluminium channels manage heat and diffuse light.
02Detail
What a good installation includes
Driver sizing and position
Drivers rated with headroom for the strip load and placed in an accessible, ventilated spot.
Feeding long runs
Power injected at intervals or both ends to keep brightness even.
Mounting
Profiles and diffusers fixed properly rather than relying on the adhesive tape alone.
Control
Dimming and switching chosen to suit the driver type.
03Checklist
Before installation
Plan driver access
An access panel or removable joinery panel.
Measure the runs
Total length decides driver size and feed points.
Choose colour and brightness
Consistently across the room.
04Questions
Questions people ask
- Why does my LED strip fade at the end?
- Voltage drop along a long run; feeding it from more than one point fixes it.
- Can LED strips be dimmed?
- With a dimmable driver and a compatible dimmer or controller.
- Why did the strip stop working after a few months?
- Overheating, an undersized driver or poor connections are common causes.
- Are LED strips safe in bathrooms?
- Only products rated for the location, with drivers placed outside wet zones.
