—Comparing the options
Dimmable and non-dimmable LED lamps
A non-dimmable LED on a dimmer flickers, buzzes and fails early. The label decides whether it belongs there.
LED lamps contain electronics that either support dimming or do not. Non-dimmable lamps are designed for on-off switching and are usually cheaper. Put on a dimmer, they may flicker, buzz, refuse to dim or fail prematurely, even with the dimmer at full.
Comparison guides weigh two electrical options against each other and note where each one fits best.
Dimmable lamps work with compatible dimmers, but performance still depends on the dimmer type and load. When replacing lamps on dimmer circuits, choose dimmable lamps of the same brand and type so they behave consistently.
01In short
The points that matter most
Check the label
Dimmable is marked on packaging.
Non-dimmable on dimmers fails
Flicker and short life.
Match replacements
Same brand and type on one dimmer.

Practical points
Identifying circuits
Dimmers often look like ordinary switches with a rotary knob or a push-and-hold plate. Knowing which ones they are prevents the wrong lamps going in.
Compatibility
Dimmable lamps still need suitable dimmers.
Mixed lamps
Two dimmable lamps from different brands on one dimmer may reach different minimum levels, so one glows while the other goes out.
Smart bulbs
Dimmed in the app, not with a wall dimmer.
Minimum load
Older dimmers designed for incandescent bulbs may need more load than a few LED lamps provide, causing flicker at low settings even with dimmable lamps.
03Checklist
When buying

04Questions
Questions people ask
- Can a dimmable lamp be used on a normal switch?
- Yes.
- Why does my lamp flicker at full brightness?
- It may be non-dimmable on a dimmer circuit.
- Do dimmable lamps cost more?
- Often slightly.
- Can I remove the dimmer?
- Replacing it with a switch is an option if dimming is not needed.
- Why do my dimmable lamps buzz?
- The dimmer may not suit LED loads. A dimmer rated for LED usually solves it.
- Can one dimmer control many downlights?
- Yes, within its rated LED load. Counting the lamps and their wattage shows whether it is within that rating.
