—Fittings and installations
Installing a ceiling fan
A ceiling fan moves, vibrates and hangs over people’s heads. The fixing matters more than the fan.
Ceiling fans are popular in Dubai alongside air conditioning, because moving air lets rooms feel comfortable at a higher thermostat setting. Installing one starts with the fixing: the fan hangs from a hook or bracket that must be anchored into the concrete slab or a structural member, not just the gypsum ceiling, and it has to carry both the weight and the constant movement of the fan.
Installation guides cover what a fitting or appliance needs from the electrics before it goes on the wall or ceiling.
The electrical side covers the supply at the ceiling point, the switch or speed regulator, and any light kit on the fan. Regulators must suit the fan’s motor; mismatched electronic regulators are a common cause of humming. Fans with lights may need separate switching for the light and the fan, which is easier to wire before walls are finished.
01In short
The points that matter most
Fix to the structure
A fan must hang from the slab or a structural fixing, never the false ceiling alone.
Match the regulator
The speed control must suit the fan motor to avoid hum and overheating.
Plan the switching
Separate control for the fan and its light is more convenient.
02Detail
What the installation involves
Ceiling point and fixing
Locating the slab, installing a rated hook or bracket and allowing for the drop rod length in rooms with false ceilings.
Supply and switching
Connecting the ceiling supply and fitting a regulator or switch arrangement suited to the fan and light.
Balancing and testing
Checking the fan runs true at every speed and that the light and controls work as intended.
03Checklist
Before buying a fan
Measure the ceiling height
Blades need clearance above head height and below the ceiling.
Check what is above
Slab, false ceiling or ducts affect the fixing.
Decide on a light
And whether it needs its own switch.
04Questions
Questions people ask
- Can a fan replace an existing light point?
- Often, if a structural fixing can be made above it and the supply is suitable.
- Do fans work in rooms with AC?
- Yes. Many households use both, raising the AC set point slightly.
- Why does my new fan hum?
- Often the regulator does not suit the fan motor.
