—Fittings and installations
Garden and landscape lighting
Garden lighting faces sun, sand, irrigation and spades. The installation has to be planned for all four.
Landscape lighting turns a villa garden into usable space after sunset. Fittings range from uplights under palms and path lights to wall washers and underwater lights in water features. Two broad approaches exist: mains-voltage fittings with cables buried in protected ducts, or low-voltage systems fed by transformers, which are more forgiving when cables are disturbed.
Installation guides cover what a fitting or appliance needs from the electrics before it goes on the wall or ceiling.
Protection matters. Cables need depth and ducting where gardeners dig, fittings must have suitable ingress ratings for sprinklers and dust, and circuits need appropriate protective devices. Controls — timers, photocells or smart scheduling — decide whether the lights are useful or forgotten.
01In short
The points that matter most
Protect the cable
Ducting and depth stop spades and roots damaging it.
Choose rated fittings
Ingress ratings suited to dust and irrigation.
Plan the controls
Timers or photocells make lighting practical.
02Detail
Design choices
Mains or low voltage
Low-voltage systems are flexible for garden changes; mains systems suit larger installations.
Fitting placement
Away from direct sprinkler spray and with glare considered for neighbours and seating.
Zoning
Separate circuits or groups for paths, trees and features.
03Checklist
Before planning
Sketch the garden
Paths, trees, seating and features.
Note irrigation
Where sprinklers reach.
Decide how lights switch
Timer, photocell or app.
04Questions
Questions people ask
- Are solar garden lights enough?
- They suit accent lighting; wired systems give more reliable light.
- Why do garden lights fail after watering?
- Water entering fittings or junctions is a common cause.
- Can lighting be added to an existing garden?
- Yes, though cable routes may disturb planting.
- How deep should garden cable be buried?
- Deep enough and in suitable ducting to be protected from digging and planting; the installer follows the applicable requirements.
