—What you are noticing
A breaker that trips when one appliance runs
When the same appliance trips the power every time, the question is simple: is it the appliance, or the circuit it is plugged into?
A breaker trips when more current flows than its circuit is designed for, or when a short circuit sends a sudden surge. An appliance that trips its breaker every time may simply draw more than that circuit can supply — a kettle and a toaster on the same kitchen circuit as an oven, for example — or it may have an internal fault.
This guide describes what people notice and what is safe to do. It does not diagnose your installation; only someone who has seen it can.
A safe test is to plug the appliance into a different circuit, ideally in another room, with little else running. If it trips there too, the appliance is the likely problem. If it works there, the original circuit may be overloaded or have a weak connection. Either way, repeated resetting is not the answer; the breaker is doing exactly what it was put there to do.
01In short
The points that matter most
Appliance or circuit
Trying the appliance on another circuit separates the two.
Overload is common
High-power appliances sharing one circuit can exceed its rating.
Leave it off after a second trip
Repeated resetting can damage cables and connections.
02Detail
What gets checked
The appliance
Its elements, motor and internal wiring for faults that draw excessive current.
The circuit load
What else shares the circuit, and whether the appliance needs a circuit of its own.
The breaker
Its rating and condition, and whether it is the right type for the load.
03Checklist
Note this first
Which appliance and which socket
And what else was running on the same circuit.
Whether it trips elsewhere
The result of trying it on another circuit.
Which device tripped
A breaker or the RCD; they point to different causes.
04Questions
Questions people ask
- Should I replace the breaker with a bigger one?
- No. A larger breaker on the same cable removes protection; the circuit and load need assessing instead.
- Why does the oven trip only when it heats up?
- Faults in heating elements often appear only once they are hot.
- Is it safe to keep using the appliance on another circuit?
- Not if it trips there too. Stop using it until it has been checked.
