—What you are noticing

A distribution board that feels warm

A board in a hot cupboard will never feel cold. A board that feels hotter than its surroundings, or smells, needs attention.

Distribution boards in Dubai are often housed in cupboards with little ventilation, and in summer the surroundings themselves are warm. That makes it harder to judge, but a board whose cover is noticeably warmer than the wall beside it, a hot spot over one particular device, or a smell of hot plastic all suggest something inside is generating heat.

This guide describes what people notice and what is safe to do. It does not diagnose your installation; only someone who has seen it can.

Heat at a board usually comes from loose connections or circuits carrying more load than they were designed for, both of which get worse over time. Reduce the load where you can, keep the cupboard clear, and have the board inspected. If there is a smell, discolouration or smoke, switch off the main switch and keep people away.

01In short

The points that matter most

  • Compare with the wall

A board warmer than its surroundings points to heat inside.

  • Hot spots matter

Heat over one device suggests a specific connection or overload.

  • Keep it ventilated

Stored items around a board trap heat.

02Detail

What an electrician checks

  • Connections

Terminals checked for tightness and heat damage.

  • Circuit loads

Whether AC and appliance circuits are overloaded.

  • Thermal imaging

Where available, a thermal check shows hot spots without opening the board under load.

03Checklist

Before the visit

  • Clear the cupboard

Remove anything stored around or against the board.

  • Note when it is warmest

Afternoons with AC running are typical.

  • Photograph any marks

    Without opening the cover.

04Questions

Questions people ask

Is some warmth normal?
Slight warmth in a hot cupboard can be. A hot spot or smell is not.
Can I add a fan to the cupboard?
Better ventilation helps, but the cause of the heat still needs finding.
Does an old board need replacing?
Not always. Inspection shows whether repair or replacement makes sense.
