—What you are noticing
LED lights that flicker on a dimmer
LED lamps and dimmers have to be matched. When they are not, the result is flicker, buzzing or lights that will not dim smoothly.
Older dimmer switches were designed for incandescent and halogen lamps, which draw much more power and dim simply by reducing voltage. LED lamps contain electronics that respond differently. On an unsuitable dimmer they can flicker at low settings, buzz, refuse to switch fully off, or turn on with a delay.
This guide describes what people notice and what is safe to do. It does not diagnose your installation; only someone who has seen it can.
Getting them to work together usually involves three things: lamps marked as dimmable, a dimmer designed for LED loads, and enough total load on the dimmer to meet its minimum. Some combinations simply do not work well, which is why manufacturers publish compatibility lists. Replacing a dimmer is a job for an electrician, but choosing the right lamps is something an owner can do.
01In short
The points that matter most
Lamps must be dimmable
Non-dimmable LEDs on a dimmer flicker and fail early.
Dimmers must suit LED
Older dimmers were made for much higher loads.
Minimum load matters
Too few LED lamps on a dimmer can fall below its working range.
02Detail
How it is resolved
Checking the lamps
Confirming every lamp on the circuit is dimmable and of the same type.
Choosing the dimmer
Selecting a dimmer suited to LED loads and the number of lamps.
Adjusting settings
Some LED dimmers have minimum-level adjustments that remove low-end flicker.
03Checklist
Before a visit
Read the lamp packaging
Look for "dimmable" and note the brand.
Count the lamps
On each dimmer circuit.
Note the symptom
Flicker, buzz, delay or not dimming fully.
04Questions
Questions people ask
- Can I just buy different bulbs?
- Sometimes dimmable lamps solve it; often the dimmer needs changing too.
- Why does it flicker only at low settings?
- Many combinations struggle at the bottom of the range; adjustable dimmers help.
- Are mixed lamp brands a problem?
- They can behave differently on the same dimmer. Matching them helps.
