—Wiring and circuits
Rewiring an apartment
Rewiring an apartment happens inside someone else’s building. The building’s rules shape the work as much as the wiring does.
Apartment rewiring usually requires approval from building management, sometimes with drawings and a method statement. Working hours, noise limits and the route for bringing materials in and taking debris out are set by the building. Supplies, risers and shared systems such as fire alarms belong to the building and must not be disturbed.
Wiring guides explain how circuits are put together and changed, so a quotation or a recommendation is easier to follow.
Physically, many apartments have concrete ceilings with cables cast into the slab, which limits new routes. New circuits are often run in false ceilings, wall chases where permitted, or surface trunking. The plan is shaped around what the building allows and what the apartment’s layout makes possible.
01In short
The points that matter most
Approval first
Building management usually needs to approve the work.
Slabs limit routes
Concrete ceilings push cables into false ceilings or walls.
Shared systems stay untouched
Risers, fire alarm and life-safety systems belong to the building.
02Detail
How it is planned
Approvals and access
Submissions, permitted hours and access routes agreed first.
Cable routes
False ceilings, permitted chases or trunking.
Board and testing
New or upgraded board, tested and labelled before reconnection.
03Checklist
Before planning
Ask the building
Approval process, hours and contractor requirements.
Decide finish levels
Whether a false ceiling is acceptable.
Plan for occupancy
Rewiring is easier in an empty apartment.
04Questions
Questions people ask
- Can apartment ceilings be chased?
- Concrete slabs are often restricted; building rules decide.
- Is surface trunking acceptable?
- It can be tidy and practical, particularly in rentals or where chasing is restricted.
- How long does approval take?
- It varies by building; allow for it in the programme.
- Do neighbours need to be told?
- The building usually notifies or sets rules for noisy work; a short note to neighbours helps as well.
