—What you are noticing
When a light switch does nothing
Before blaming the switch, rule out the lamp and the circuit. If both are fine, the switch or its connections are next.
A switch that does nothing may be perfectly fine: the lamp may have failed, the lighting circuit may have tripped, or a fitting may have lost its connection. Changing the lamp and checking the board are safe first steps that often solve it.
This guide describes what people notice and what is safe to do. It does not diagnose your installation; only someone who has seen it can.
Where lights are controlled from two places — at the top and bottom of stairs, or at both ends of a corridor — a fault in one switch can make the other appear to stop working. Smart switches add another layer, with power supplies and settings of their own. When the simple checks do not help, the switch and its wiring need checking with the circuit isolated.
